Guide: How to Use a Coupon Code or Promo Code

What is a Coupon Code?

A coupon code is a string of characters or numbers you enter at a retailers website when checking out and paying for the item you intend to buy. Coupon codes are also known as "promo codes", and have become increasingly popular over the last few years. After submitting the code, a discount of some kind should be applied to the product(s) you are purchasing. There are a number of things to be aware of when using/entering promo codes which I will I cover in this article to the best of my ability.

What Kind of Discounts?

The discount you receive depends on the retailer. The most popular are simple percentage-off deals. A popular but more rare type of promo code is one that takes 'X' amount of dollars off of your order total after having spent a certain amount.

For example, NeweggBusiness occasionally has a deal where you get $50 off your order after you spend $250 or more on any combination of items. Most of these types of deals do not count tax and shipping as being part of your 'total order'.

Can I Use More Than One?

This is better known as "stacking" and is rarely ever accepted by any online retailer. Most online retailers either allow one promo code per item or one promo code per checkout.

A few stores that have allowed stacking in the past are Kohls, Logitechs website, and grocery store websites.

Where Can I Find the Latest Promo Codes?

See the end of the article for a couple sources. A simple Google search is also great for this. Just use words like Coupon Code, Promo Code, Savings, Discount in your search and you should get plenty of results. A lot of the time the actual retailer site themselves will advertise the latest coupon codes. In my experience I find that the best ones are usually ones that not a lot of people know about.

What If My Code Doesn't Work?

Make sure you entered it correctly and that the code has not expired. Those are probably the two main reasons why a coupon code comes up as invalid. Usually the website will display a brief message on why the code didn't work. It is a rare case for the website to be at fault when a code does not work. So make a checklist and one of the above causes will likely arise.
