In 1911, the company changed to simply the Dayton Company, and in the 1950's started growing with the purchase of a department store in Portland, Oregon called Lipmans. In 1956, the Dayton Company opened the first two story enclosed mall in Edina, Minneapolis and soon afterward opened their second store.

In 1962, the first Target store was launched. The name Target was used because these new stores (4 in the first year) were going to be discount outlets and the company did not want to confuse consumers with the Dayton department store concept. The success of Target was slow at first, but became profitable in 1965. The next year the company launched B. Dalton Booksellers which became the largest hardcover bookstore seller. The Dalton was derived from the Dayton name by eliminating the "y" for an "l".

Most recently Target has moved outside the continental boundaries with stores in Hawaii and Alaska. They also continue to add SuperTarget Stores, a concept that was started back in 1995 with a first store in Omaha, Nebraska.
